On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward for our planet.

Now 50 years later we are celebrating our 50th anniversary of Earth Day 2020. The theme this year is climate action.  But really, we have to remember Earth Day didn’t start 50 years ago. Indigenous people have been caring for the earth for thousands of years.

Ironically, Earth Day 2020 is taking place during one of the most widespread pandemics the world has seen for generations. As a result, we are being invited to reassess and re-evaluate what we have been doing to Mother Earth.

This current time is asking us how to we want to create the future. It is asking us to awaken. This crisis is deepening the relationship we have with Mother Earth. We can only change our old patterns if we enter into an intimate relationship with Mother Earth.  Mother Earth is instrumental in healing our relationship with ourselves and with each other.

We have been forced into a ‘planetary pause’ and Mother Earth is sighing with relief and gratitude. Her waterways are running cleaner and clearer, her skies free from smog; large cities are no longer cloaked in grey, and we are all breathing more easily.

The Indigenous philosophy says, “You take care of the earth and the earth will take care of you.”

Given this year’s theme here are some climate action steps:

  1. Walk, cycle, or take transit instead of driving.
  2. Limit your consumption.
  3. Reduce your food waste.
  4. Use less energy at home.
  5. Limit your air travel.
  6. Give your home an energy retrofit.
  7. If you have to drive, consider an electric vehicle or plug-In hybrid.
  8. Use renewable energy.
  9. Eat less meat and more plant-based foods.
  10. Ask your political representatives to do more to fight climate change.
  11. Vote for the environment.

But the bottom line beyond these practical actions is to ask, how do we want to live?  Who do we want to be? We are being shown the way to co-exist, to simplify, to share and create a world that works.
